The Gerhardt Student Research Excellence Award
 
     
 
Funds will be awarded to students who demonstrate exemplary accomplishment in experimental design and results that are reported as a poster or as an oral presentation at a MI-ASM meeting.
 
     
  Eligibility Criteria: These awards are open to students of the biological sciences who are preparing for a career in the field of microbiology. An applicant must be currently enrolled in an accredited educational institution in Michigan, have been a member of the ASM and/or the Michigan ASM for at least one year, and shows evidence of involvement in microbiology research or related activities (e.g. abstracts, grants, active research projects; teaching; volunteer activities).  
     
 
Undergraduates and first-year graduate students are encouraged to apply.
 
     
 
Annual Award Value: Up to $400 for Research Excellence Awards
 
     
     
 
Application Procedure
 
     
  Faculty, mentors, laboratory personnel or students themselves may initiate the nomination. The individual making the nomination must be a current member of the ASM and/or the Michigan ASM. A nominated student must submit the following items to the Michigan ASM:  
     
  1. A  report (maximum 3 pages) of his/her research project which addresses the hypotheses being tested, brief description of methods used, results to date (include figures/tables if appropriate), and conclusions. Include key references as necessary. If applicable, include the URL of any web site that further elaborates your research.

2. A letter of recommendation from the research sponsor or advisor that addresses the reasons why the nominee would be a good candidate for the award. Additional reference letters may also be submitted.

3. Abstracts of any other research that may have been presented orally or as a poster at a conference by the nominee.
 
     
  Applications must be postmarked no later than six weeks prior to the spring or fall MI-ASM Branch meeting, so that award winners can be announced at the Branch meeting. The successful awardee will receive information detailing how their final report is to be made to the MI-ASM Board and to Dr. Gerhardt. Please submit application materials to:
