The Gerhardt Student Travel Award

Awards will be granted to students to supplement other financial resources for travel so as to allow the awardees to attend an appropriate microbiology-related scientific meeting, or to obtain special microbiology-related research training.

Eligibility Criteria: These awards are open to students of the biological sciences who are preparing for a career in the field of microbiology. An applicant must be currently enrolled in an accredited educational institution in Michigan, have been a member of the ASM and/or the Michigan ASM for at least one year, and shows evidence of involvement in microbiology research or related activities (e.g. abstracts, grants, active research projects; teaching; volunteer activities).

Undergraduates and first-year graduate students are encouraged to apply.

Annual Award Value: Up to $600 for Travel Awards

Application Procedure

Faculty, mentors, laboratory personnel or students themselves may initiate the nomination. The individual making the nomination must be a current member of the ASM and/or the Michigan ASM. A nominated student must submit the following items to the Michigan ASM:

  1. A personal statement (maximum 2 pages) which summarizes how attending this particular conference or training workshop will benefit you as a student of microbiology. Please include sufficient details about the conference or workshop, such as location, speakers, topics to be covered, and a URL (if available) for the event you are traveling to. If available, also include any official brochures about the conference or training workshop.

2. A letter from a sponsor or advisor that addresses the reasons why the nominee would be a good candidate for the award and justifies a need for financial assistance.

Applications must be postmarked no later than six weeks prior to the spring or fall MI-ASM Branch meeting, so that award winners can be announced at the Branch meeting. The successful awardee will receive information detailing how their final report is to be made to the MI-ASM Board and to Dr. Gerhardt. Please submit application materials to:
