Michèle Shuster is an Assistant Professor of Biology at New Mexico State University (NMSU). She has taught a variety of courses at the introductory and advanced levels. These include introductory biology for majors and non-majors, allied health courses in microbiology and physiology, genetics, and an upper division course on cancer. Her research interests are in the Scholarship of Teaching and Learning, or taking a scientific approach to understanding how different teaching approaches help students learn and appreciate biology. Her research projects involving undergraduate education have looked at discipline-specific education (e.g., cancer biology), as well as how different approaches influence learning (e.g., student learning style preferences and the use of authentic data and images in introductory biology). In addition to her undergraduate teaching, Michèle has teaching and research projects involving K-8 teachers and students, working towards improving elementary and middle school science education. Her funded projects are currently from the National Institutes of Health, the National Science Foundation and the Department of Education. She has been honored to receive several awards, including the Roush Award for Teaching Excellence (2007, NMSU), and the Award for Innovative Excellence in Teaching, Learning and Technology at the 18th Annual Conference on College Teaching and Learning (2007). |
