Presentation Guidelines

The Michigan Branch of ASM encourages students (undergrad and graduate), as well as faculty, post-docs and other professional microbiologists, to present presentations at our fall and spring meetings. While a poster or student presentation may relate to the general theme of the conference, this is not a requirement for submission.  We welcome posters and presentations on other topics in microbiology.

Presentation Formats

1. Four student abstracts will be accepted for oral presentations of 15 minutes each (10 minutes for the presentation and 5 minutes for discussion).  Abstracts must be submitted by Friday, March 28 at 5 pm to be considered for an oral presentation.

2. To be considered for this session, the student must be the primary author and presenter.

3. Abstract selection will be based on scientific content, composition, and adherence to abstract preparation guidelines (see below).

4. All abstracts received after Friday, March 28 will only be considered for poster presentations.

5. The deadline for submitting abstracts for posting to the website is Wednesday, April 9 at 5 pm. You may submit abstracts after this date, but they will not be posted until after the conference.

Abstract Preparation

1. Follow the ASM guidelines for abstract preparation (see below), as modified for use with the MI-ASM meeting.

2. Use Times New Roman 12-pt. font and save the text in rich text format (rtf). Abbreviations that are generally understood are acceptable. Italicize all scientific names and all appropriate genetic terminology, if possible.

General Meeting Abstract Guidelines
(pp. 6 – 8:
http://www.gm.asm.org/documents/GM2008-Call_For_Abs-Long.pdf

Title: The title should clearly and succinctly identify the contents of the abstract. Capitalize the first letter of each word except prepositions, articles and species names. Italicize scientific names of organisms (e.g., Candida albicans).

Authors and Addresses: Provide the following information for each author: Last Name, First (Given) Name, and Middle Initial.  Add an asterisk (*) after the name for the presenter.  Information should be provided for each author’s institution/affiliation. Do not include the department, division, branch, street address, etc. when completing the institution information. Enter the City, State and zip/postal code.

Abstract Text The text of each abstract should consist of no more than 1850 characters (excluding spaces). Do not include title and author information as part of the abstract body. The abstract text may be prepared in any standard word processing program. Insert sub or superscripts, boldface, italics, or other required symbols as necessary. Tables, if presented, should be as simple as possible. Graphics (graphs, pictures, etc.) are not recommended, as they are extremely difficult to properly size in the space available.

While all abstracts may not exactly fit the following guidelines (e.g., a case study), abstracts should contain the following key points:

Background The problem under investigation or a hypothesis
Methods The experimental methods or protocols used to accomplish the research
Results The key points derived from experiments. Data should be            summarized and adequately presented to allow the reviewers to judge the content. Generalizations such as “will be discussed” or “will be presented” are not acceptable; and
Conclusion A summary of your findings supported by the data presented

Note in the body of your abstract if you presented your poster at an ASM National Meeting or at another conference.

Poster Exhibition (more details and possible changes coming soon)

  1. Your poster should be prepared to fit on a tri-fold (self-standing) 4 ft high x 6 ft wide foam board that will be provided.
  2. The tri-fold board will be standing on "waist high" tables. Plan your use of the space in the tri-fold accordingly so that they are easily read by conference participants.
  3. If your poster is larger than the above dimensions or you anticipate other special needs to present your research, please contact the meeting organizers and let them know of these needs.  Special accommodations will be considered but cannot be guaranteed.
